Horn recommendation

GLad you can do so close(enough) to you.

I have mine here, but the process to QLD and back...

Auditioning is a good first step .

Another necessary step is to measure what you are auditioning to gain solid technical support for "your impressions" .

See below ;

Here's ( sfoggs' ) measurement of an Altec 288-8K ( on a 805B multicell ) loaded with a brand new GPA diaphragm .
( I'll assume you're familiar with this series of pics since he ( Shawn ) mostly hangs at the Klipsch forum and has participated in threads where you were also posting ) .

One can see on the ( above ) 1/3 octave capture that the combo looks pretty solid down to 400 hz .

Of course if one were to attempt to make a meaningful assessment of this combo with the old diaphragm , one would have to come to a different conclusion . See below ;

All 288s that have seen Sound Reinforcement ( PA ) work will suffer from having some form of truncated Frequency Response ( due to "work hardening" of the diaphragms' suspension ) .

You'd only be doing yourself a favour if you acquire some test gear so that you can determine where the "health" of the ( soon to be auditioned ) combos sit ( relative to the above pics ) .

I hear what you are saying but unfortunately I have no access to test equipment nor the ability to use it. I'll have to trust my ears on this one.

What I can tell you is that these drivers have seen PA use, but they will be fitted with brand new diaphragms before the audition & will stay there if I decide to keep them.

Will try to confirm exactly what type of diaphragm this "new" one will be.

It's not near as flat as I would have hoped for ( without employing some extensive filtering )

The newer 290G ( & later ) on a big radial horn looks a lot better .

- John, if you swing back to desiring a 290 type driver , call GPA and ask if they will bolt a new 390 onto either a 511E or an 805B multicell, so that they can measure it with their TEF unit ( & then send you the FR as a pic ) .
- I would hope that their 390 driver has retained the improved response characteristics of the improved Altec 290-G ( as seen above ) .

As the 288's that I am going to audition are available in OZ, I'll probably see how they perform first. I'm expecting them to be pretty spectacular, hope I'm not disappointed.

Yep, the ferrite 290s look like that too. MRII horns are at least as smooth as well. IMO, from 500-7kHz, the Giant Voice is as articulate as any. :)

Not to mention doing it loud as stink...:D
